The public consultation for Ireland’s new diaspora policy has drawn to a close after five months of wide-ranging engagement at home and abroad. Minister of State for the Diaspora and International Development Ciarán Cannon T.D. hosted the final consultation event in Ireland in Castlebar, Co. Mayo yesterday.
Ireland’s new diaspora policy, due to be published in early 2020, will refashion and renew Ireland’s engagement with Irish people living abroad. A core aim of the new policy is to respond to the changing needs of the contemporary diaspora, as well as to reinforce the successful relationships which have been forged in the past.
The consultation programme included 30 meetings both in Ireland and overseas, facilitated by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and by Ireland’s network of Embassies and Consulates abroad. In addition to this, written contributions conveyed the views of organisations and individuals around the world.
The wide range of opinions expressed over the course of the consultation will directly inform the development of Ireland’s new diaspora policy, and will help to build a stronger and more vibrant global Irish community.
