Ireland-Egypt Relations

The Embassy plays an important role in fostering bilateral ties between Ireland and Egypt.

Ireland established diplomatic relations with Egypt in 1975. The Embassy of Ireland in Cairo was opened the same year. Egypt opened an embassy in Ireland in 1978, the first Arab country to do so.

Egypt is an important partner for Ireland and the EU and the ties of friendship between our two countries go back many years. Both our peoples are strong in character, in traditions, in resilience and in their determination to build a better future. Both Ireland and Egypt share a commitment to the UN and its Charter and both countries have a long association with UN Peace-keeping operations. Egypt has also worked closely with Ireland in the field of nuclear disarmament and is a member of the New Agenda Coalition.

Economic relations between Ireland and Egypt are good and there are excellent opportunities to expand economic links in the food, health, scientific and education sectors in the coming years. Bilateral ties have taken on a new dimension in recent years with increasing numbers of Egyptian citizens moving to live and work in Ireland.
