1916 Rising Exhibition– Selected personalities and their writings

On Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, at a time when Ireland was an integral part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, seven Irishmen proclaimed the establishment of the Irish Republic, nominating themselves as its provisional government. Together with 1,600 poorly armed followers, they occupied a number of prominent buildings near the centre of Dublin, the General Post Office in Sackville Street (now O’Connell Street) being designated as headquarters. ©National Library of Ireland.

2016 marks the centenary of this event with various commemorations around the globe. The National Library of Malta, in conjunction with the Embassy of Ireland in Malta, will be exhibiting a collection of documents, illustrations and writings by personalities associated with the Irish 1916 Rising drawn from the University of Malta’s Elyan Collection.

The exhibition will be formally launched on Monday 14th March 2016 at 7pm in the National Library of Malta.
