On behalf of the team at the Embassy of Ireland in Madrid, welcome to our website.
It is a great honour for me to represent Ireland as Ambassador. I am delighted to have been appointed at a time when relations between Ireland and Spain are strong and flourishing. I look forward to contributing to this vibrant and positive relationship both bilaterally and as committed members of the European Union.
I am very conscious that both Ireland and Spain have been deeply affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The public health situation plays a big role in the daily work of the Embassy, whether this relates directly to the consular service provided to Irish citizens living in or visiting Spain, or to the wide range of political, economic, social and cultural work that the Embassy undertakes.
The empathy that Irish and Spanish people feel towards each other has deep roots. From the earliest migrations from Spain’s northern coast to Ireland, contacts have continued. The arrival in Spain during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries of many Irish people marked a particularly significant point in our relations. In Spain, these refugees received not only sanctuary but also opportunities denied to them at home with many playing prominent roles in Spanish society, including in senior political and military positions.
Today, Spain continues to be home for many Irish people, and, at the same time, Ireland is enriched by the presence of many Spaniards. In addition to our resident communities, tourism between our two countries has grown strongly. In the period before the Covid pandemic Irish people made some 1.8 million visits to Spain each year, and some 440,000 Spanish people visited Ireland.
Trade and investments links between our countries also continue to grow. The Embassy works closely with the Irish State Agencies in Madrid – Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia (the Irish Food Board) and Tourism Ireland – as well as with key partners such as the Spanish-Irish Business Network. Spain is Ireland's sixth largest EU market with a combined trade in goods and services worth €11 bn.
Supporting our Irish community, both residents and visitors, is a particular priority for our team at the Embassy. In this work, our network of Honorary Consuls assists us, and we are very grateful to them for their service to Irish citizens.
Appreciation of our respective cultures is a very positive aspect of the Irish-Spanish relationship. Showcasing Creative Ireland in Spain through music, poetry, literature, art and other mediums, and forging greater links between Irish and Spanish artists will continue to be a priority for our Embassy team in the period ahead.

Es un gran honor para mí representar a Irlanda como Embajador. Estoy encantado de haber sido nombrado en un momento floreciente para las sólidas relaciones entre Irlanda y España. Soy muy consciente de que tanto Irlanda como España se han visto profundamente afectadas por la pandemia de Covid-19. La situación de salud pública representa una parte muy importante del trabajo diario de la Embajada y se manifiesta directamente en los servicios consulares prestados a los ciudadanos irlandeses que visitan o viven en España, así como en el amplio abanico de trabajo político, económico, social y cultural que realiza la Embajada.
La empatía que irlandeses y españoles sienten mutuamente tiene unas raíces profundas. Desde los tiempos de las primeras migraciones a Irlanda desde la costa norte de España, los contactos han continuado. La llegada a España durante los siglos XVII y XVIII de muchos irlandeses supuso un punto especialmente significativo en nuestras relaciones. En España, estos refugiados no solo recibieron cobijo, sino también las oportunidades que les negaban en su tierra, y muchos desempeñaron papeles prominentes en la sociedad española, incluso en altos cargos políticos y militares.
Hoy en día, España sigue siendo el hogar de muchos irlandeses y, al mismo tiempo, Irlanda se enriquece con la presencia de muchos españoles. Además de nuestras comunidades residentes, el turismo entre nuestros dos países ha aumentado enormemente. En el periodo anterior a la pandemia de Covid, los irlandeses realizaban aproximadamente 1,8 millones de visitas a España cada año, y unos 440.000 españoles visitaban Irlanda.
Los vínculos comerciales y de inversión entre nuestros países también continúan aumentando. La Embajada trabaja en estrecha colaboración con las Agencias Estatales de Irlanda en Madrid – Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia (Agencia de Alimentos de Irlanda) y Tourism Ireland – así como con socios clave como la Red Empresarial Hispano-Irlandesa (Spanish-Irish Business Network). España es el sexto mercado más grande de Irlanda en la UE, con un comercio combinado de bienes y servicios por valor de 11.000 millones de euros.
Apoyar a nuestra comunidad irlandesa, tanto a los residentes como a los visitantes, es una prioridad para nuestro equipo en la Embajada. Para desempeñar este trabajo contamos con la asistencia de nuestra red de Cónsules Honorarios, a los que agradecemos enormemente su servicio a los ciudadanos irlandeses.
La apreciación de nuestras respectivas culturas es un aspecto muy positivo de la relación entre España e Irlanda. La promoción de Creative Ireland en España a través de la música, la poesía, la literatura, el arte y otros medios, junto con el desarrollo de mayores vínculos entre artistas irlandeses y españoles, seguirá siendo una prioridad para el equipo de la Embajada en el próximo periodo.
