Ambassador’s Welcome Message
Dear Friends, a chairde,
Welcome to the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the UN. We hope that you will use this website as a means of keeping in touch with what is happening at the UN, and the difference Ireland and our team are making here in the greatest global forum there is - the United Nations.
My name is Fergal Mythen and I am Ireland’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations. I believe that, for the people of Ireland, the UN is part of who and what we are. It is in our DNA. As a small country with its own troubled past, having experienced famine and conflict over many generations, we see both our values and interests firmly embedded in a rules-based international order built on the principles of peace and security and friendly relations among nations.
I lead a dynamic, dedicated team at the Mission of Ireland and we work hard to promote those Irish values and interests.
Ireland has kept faith with the UN since we joined in 1955 as a young Republic which had fought hard for its independence. Back then, we saw being a member of the UN as fundamental to our future and to our own peace and security. We still do so nearly 70 years later.
And we certainly have something to say about the future of the Organisation, and the role we believe it must play in reducing suffering across the globe, addressing the climate crisis and its impacts, and securing our shared peace, security and prosperity.
As Ambassador to the UN, I will work tirelessly to ensure that Ireland's voice is heard. This can be difficult, but as we have shown in the last two years as an elected member of the Security Council, we have a credible and respected voice and we will not stop trying to make a difference where it matters – on peacekeeping and disarmament, on development and humanitarian issues, on addressing climate change and tackling hunger, on promoting and protecting human rights and gender equality issues, and on implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.
We have something to say at the UN, and, equally importantly, we listen when others speak. And even as we leave the Security Council in the coming months, we will continue to work every day to make an even greater difference at the UN.
Please follow our activities here on the website and on twitter @irishmissionun and @IrelandAmbUN.
Thank you, go raibh míle maith agaibh,
Fergal Mythen
