Ongoing Events
Through December 23: Theatre for a New Audience's version of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot was extended for the final time at the Polonsky Shakespeare Center in Brooklyn starring Michael Shannon and Paul Sparks.
Through December 21: Irish American music ensemble, Cherish the Ladies, will be performing several shows in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Full tour details can be found here.
Through December 31: The debut production of Brian Friel’s Translations will be performed at the Irish Repertory Theatre, as part of the Friel Project, which celebrates its 35th year of performing Friel’s plays. Translations focuses on the importance of cultural identity and language in Ireland.
Through January 7: New York-based Dublin born photographer Alen MacWeeney has an exhibition at the New York Public Library titled 'New York Subways 1977: Alen MacWeeney' with his collection of subway photographs.
December Events
December 12: Black, Brown, and Green Voices virtual series continues with Leslie Harris, hosted online by Glucksman Ireland House.
December 13 – 21: Irish Christmas in America: The Show will have performances at various venues in Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Produced by Sligo fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada, the hugely popular Irish Christmas in America show features top Irish music, song and dance in an engaging performance. December 14-17: Irish Arts Center hosts their annual Céilí event with Seán Curran Company and Darrah Carr Dance*.
December 18: Glucksman Ireland House, in partnership with the Irish Consulate in New York, hosts the US launch of the book, All Strangers Here – 100 Years of Personal Writing from the Irish Foreign Service. The event will include a keynote address from Congressman Richard Neal, a panel discussion by contributors, and readings from the anthology, followed by a Q&A session and reception. December 20: Irish American Writers and Artists will be having a Holiday and Humor Salon with Sarah Fearon and Marian Fontana. Registeration is required.
January Events
January 5 - January 21: Under the Radar, which is a festival of plays and performances from New York and global artists, returns to New York. As part of the festival, there are Irish highlights including:
- January 5 - January 13: The North American premiere of Pan Pan's book club, Ireland-based theatre company Pan Pan's The First Bad Man, will have performances at Lincoln Center and is ‘an immersive, comedic, and occasionally combative exploration of the intersections between the play's characters and its inspirations’*.
- January 10 - January 21: Volcano, written, directed and choreographed by Luke Murphy, is a mini series of performances about a journey in a glass-enclosed living room, transpiring past ‘earth and space, reality, and fiction’. Volcano is a four-part mini-series of 45-minute ‘episodes’ which run in total for 3 hours and 30 minutes. For more information and tickets, see this link*.
January 11 - March 3: The second instalment of Irish Repertory Theatre’s The Friel Project is Aristocrats. For more information about the show and tickets, see this link.
January 13 – January 21: Grand Soft Day, produced by Ireland’s Branar Theatre and UK’s New International Encounter in association with Culture Ireland, presents a 2-5 year old friendly 40 minute production of ‘an all-seasons adventure filled with live music’ at New 42 Studios*. January 25 - February 4: Folk pop singer-songwriter Darren Kiely from Cork will be performing at various venues throughout Connecticut, Ohio, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania as part of his latest tour. All tour dates and ticket information can be found here.
