Save Environment and People Agency Zambia Chairlady visits Embassy of Ireland Lusaka
The chairlady of Save Environment and People Agency Zambia Mailes Zulu Muke paid a courtesy call to His Excellency, Séamus O’Grady, Ambassador of Ireland to Zambia on 7th November at the Embassy of Ireland in Lusaka. Mailes is on her way to Bonn, Germany, to participate in the COP 23 deliberations. She is one of the three representatives of grassroots organisations that have been invited by the Mary Robinson Foundation to share their experiences at the COP 23.
Save Environment and People Agency is a climate advocacy grassroots organisation based in the North Western province of Zambia, the organisation tackles a wide range of environmental and climate issues in the district of Zambezi, where they operate. Deforestation is high on their agenda due to mining activities and not only does deforestation deprive the local people of the non-timber forest products like honey, mushrooms and wildlife, it also threatens the source of big rivers like the Zambezi, Kafue and Kabompo rivers. Save Environment and People Agency is helping to raise awareness among the locals and the traditional leaders on these issues, while at the same time advocating the Government to include climate considerations in their development planning. Save Environment and People Agency is also strongly involved in supporting women in income generating activities like hand crafts. Mailes will share these experiences with global leaders and policy makers at the COP 23 in Bonn. Mailes will speak in two high level discussions fora and four other fora. COP 23 runs from 6th to 17 November 2017.
