Applications are invited for a full-time Legal Policy Adviser position at the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations in New York.
The Legal Policy Adviser, with the guidance and oversight of the Mission’s Legal Adviser, will work on a broad range of legal issues arising at the United Nations (UN), including in relation to human rights, international criminal justice, the law of the sea, international humanitarian law, and the operation of the UN General Assembly and Security Council. The Legal Policy Adviser will also work on sanctions and counter-terrorism matters. The Legal Policy Adviser’s work may include assisting the Legal Adviser through carrying out legal research and analysis, and participating in and reporting on meetings and events at or in relation to the work of the UN.
The Legal Policy Adviser may also be called upon to support other activities of the Mission as they arise, including by assisting in the organisation and running of events hosted by the Mission and by providing logistical support during the annual High Level Week and International Law Week at the UN.

Key requirements which candidates must be able to demonstrate
- A degree or post-graduate qualification in law;
- At least 1 year of relevant professional experience;
- A strong interest in and knowledge of public international law, gained through relevant study or work experience;
- Excellent interpersonal skills;
- Advanced written and oral communication skills, with the ability to quickly distil and synthesise complex information in writing, and to present it clearly and concisely orally;
- An ability to self-start and work with clear focus, direction and a strong results orientation;
- An ability to manage and prioritise within a varied workload;
- Computer literacy and information management skills;
Desirable Requirements:
- Knowledge of French, and/or proficiency in other UN languages;
- A greater amount than the requisite professional experience;
- Experience in a similar role.
Terms and conditions of employment:
- Salaries are paid direct to a bank account; the successful candidate must therefore have a bank account;
- The successful candidate will be hired on a two year fixed-term contractual basis and will be based at the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations, New York.
- Contracts are governed by US labour laws in accordance with US, State and Local Employment Law.
- Please note that, where applicable, the Mission does not withhold taxes at source, therefore the successful candidate is responsible for all taxes including social security contributions.
- On request, successful candidates must be in a position to provide evidence of their compliance with applicable tax and social insurance obligations.
- The successful candidate will be responsible for making their own arrangements regarding local transport, health insurance and accommodation whilst employed by the Permanent Mission of Ireland.
- The Permanent Mission will contribute 80% of the cost of standard personal medical insurance for the duration of employment, subject to a reasonable monthly health plan.
- The successful candidate will be responsible for any relocation arrangements and/or costs that might arise.
- Hours of attendance will be as fixed from time to time, but will amount to on average not less than 43 ¼ hours gross, or 37 hours net per week. Where extra attendance is necessary, time off in lieu will be allowed in accordance with the Civil Service overtime regulations.
- The positions will have an annual leave allowance of 20 days per annum, exclusive of public holidays, adjusted where necessary pro rata.

Selection Process:
- Depending on the number of applications received, a short-listing of candidates to be called for a competency-based interview may be undertaken based on the requirements above.
- It is planned that interviews will be held by video-conference in mid January 2024;
- A skills test may be included in the recruitment process;
- A second interview may be included in the recruitment process;
- A panel may be set up depending on the calibre of candidates.
Security Clearance for Local Staff:
Police security clearance will be sought in respect of individuals who come under consideration for appointment. Enquiries may also be made with the police force of any country in which the applicant under consideration for appointment resided. If unsuccessful, this information will be destroyed.
