Ireland aligns with the statement of the European Union and adds the following.
Madam Vice President,
Ireland warmly welcomes both the Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence and the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide. We thank both for their joint report and presentation.
Ireland re-affirms our strong support for the mandate of Special Rapporteur de Grieff. Ireland strongly supports the UN Secretary-General’s emphasis on prevention and wholeheartedly supports the Secretary General’s efforts to highlight the importance of human rights within the prevention framework.
Ireland’s direct experience of transitional justice and reconciliation comes through the Peace Process founded on the Good Friday Agreement. Ireland acknowledges the work of Special Rapporteur de Grieff in his role, in particular his contribution to the ongoing efforts to support a comprehensive approach to dealing with the legacy of the Troubles and deepening reconciliation in Northern Ireland.
Ireland also welcomes the work of the Special Adviser of the Secretary General on the Prevention of Genocide, in particular, his statements on atrocities committed in specific countries such as Myanmar and Syria. The human rights abuses occurring in countries around the world are greatly troubling to Ireland and we take this opportunity to highlight our support for the protection of Human Rights throughout the world.
Ireland firmly believes human rights are crucial in preventing conflict. We believe that human rights should be at the core of all actions taken by the international community towards peace and development.
